Over that time we have sold many brands such as Sharp LCD TVs and Sennheiser headphones both of which we removed from our lineup: after the 'exclusive' Sharp models we sold were given to Harvey Norman and we became a showroom for Gerry, and Sennheiser because of the brand being overexposed by being sold just about everywhere, and the failed attempt to stop ridiculous discounting which made the brand a bad business decision.
Other brands such as KEF, Marantz, Usher, Tannoy and others were taken way from us when we decided to close our Neutral Bay showroom and go purely online. The price of progress or pure ignorance? You decide...
Eighteen months ago we changed the business model again, this time due to the constant complaints of customers in regard to pricing of products in Australia versus buying overseas. We had just taken on Bryston at the time and a customer interested in the integrated amplifier asked me why I was charging $7,000 for an amplifier which was $3000 in the USA. I questioned why I was paying $4700 for it and decided there and then to return Bryston to the distributor and to completely change the way we did business. And that was to re-launch our showroom and primarily source product direct from the manufacturers to sell to our customers as close as possible to parity with overseas markets.
We secured some fantastic products along the way and it has worked very well for us thus far. We have still been carrying some products sourced through local distributors, but in the last few weeks it seems that changes are needed once again.
Due to certain dealers pricing policies being 'must be the cheapest to sell' or box movers relying on quantity sales it has yet again become a race to the bottom with products being sold at stupidly low prices that make little or no business sense. We are all for offering value to our customers but if we are to be here next year we have to make a profit to cover costs and some dealers are so desperate for a sale that they will sell for virtually no profit. It is madness.
On top of that we are now seeing foreign online electronics resellers making Australian web sites and selling grey marketed product into Australia making competition even more difficult for local dealers. Sadly however at least one of our manufacturers is allowing at least one of those companies to sell product we launched in this country, and they are doing so without proper regulatory marks which means it puts that brand at risk and we no longer want any part of it.
So, expect a few more changes early next year as we change the line up of product by removing those products which are of little business value and add some exciting new products for 2012. In January the C.E.S. Trade Show will be on in Las Vegas and a few of our brands will be showing some very exciting new products and we can't wait to bring them in for you, stay tuned!
